The fabulous fabric we call Silk is an animal product and its soft, luster and supple feel has made it widely used. The absorbency is an advantage in silk, which keeps the body comfortable in any type of weather.
Silkworms, which in fact are caterpillars, are the little creatures responsible for making silk.
What about all those kinds of silk fabric?
There are many kinds of silk. For hand painting here at Silk Art From Brazil, we use Habotai, Crepe de Chine, Chiffon, Silk Satin, and Charmeuse.
Within each kind, there are variations of weight. The higher the momme weight (mm)of the silk, the heavier the fabric. Note that a higher weight is not always better... it depends on the application!
Habotai
This is what is usually called China Silk. 5mm and 8mm are used in scarves. Higher weights will not drape so well, but we like to use them in handbags and jewelry.
Habotai silk has a smooth surface and a nice luster.
The hand painted scarves on the left and right are Habotai 8mm.
Crepe de Chine
I have a soft spot for this one. It doesn't have much sheen but has a marvelous, almost velvety texture and drapes beautifully, as you can see in the hand painted scarf on the right.
It has a very subtle crinkle texture.
Chiffon
Chiffon is a sheer, light weight fabric, with a slightly crinckle texture. It drapes magnificently, making it a great choice for hand painted scarves.
You can appreciate its texture in the photo on the right, as well as its dull, soft finish.
Silk Satin
Satin is a kind of weave that can be done using different fibers, like silk, polyester or nylon. Of course, silk satin is the most luxurious one.
Silk satin has a fantastic drape and very high luster. Nothing compares to the sensation of silk satin against the skin!
Charmeuse
Charmeuse is also known as crepe backed satin. Yes, it is right: on one side it looks like crepe de chine, on the other it is lustrous and reflective like satin.
It has a marvelous drape and delicate hand.
